Governor Announces Schools to Participate in Year One
Map of 2008 Cohort of Schools
On August 29th, 2007, Governor Kaine accepted a
check for $13,200,000.00 from the National Math and
Science Initiative as seed funding for the Virginia Math
and Science Initiative. Governor Kaine stated that this
exciting program would "move Virginia's students from
competence to excellence." He sited the fact that
Virginia has been ranked the best state in the nation
for a student to attend public schools, primarily due to
the establishment of the Standards of Learning and work
that Virginia's public schools have taken to help
students meet these minimum competencies. But to prepare
students for the academic rigor required for careers in
the global economy Virginia schools are going to have to
move beyond standards to academic rigor. The Advanced
Placement classes do this, and the Virginia Advanced
Study Strategies will support Virginia schools as they
embrace this challenging curriculum.
